What a great Week 6 this was for College football fans. USC got back on track in the best way possible. The Big 10 is looking like a three team race with Penn State, Illinois, and the ever present Ohio State. Can Ohio State be dethroned as the perrinial Big 10 champions? The SEC is now beating up on each other: I did call that Vanderbilt upset over Auburn. And the Big 12 top teams all rolled to victory. I am so excited about Texas-OU. Hook ‘Em Horns!!! Oh, sorry. I let my fandom slip out there. We also had some great individual performances as well. So let’s begin.

Players that had great games in a losing cause

Lyle Moevao (Oregon State) had the Beavers right where he wanted them to be: ahead of the Utah Utes in the 4th quarter 28-20. But that is why they play the games. Despite Moevao going 21-31 for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns, the Beavers fell to the Utes 31-28. One thing the Beavers showed was beating USC was not a fluke and that they really could play with some of the best teams in the country. They might be the team to still the PAC 10 championship away from USC. But they must go undefeated in the PAC 10. Can they do it? It is possible. Aldrick Robinson of SMU had a nice game against UCF. With the offensive and defensive effort SMU had, they should have won. But SMU wasted 10 receptions for 210 yards and a touchdown because of 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles in a 31-17 loss. What can you say to that? Usually when Donald Brown runs well, UCONN wins. But not his time. Brown had his stellar day of 161 yards rushing and a touchdown, but 3 interceptions turnovers killed UCONN’s change to remain unbeaten against North Carolina. Those types of games will kill you. To bad it wasted a great running day by Brown.

Nominees

Todd Reesing (Kansas) knew what he needed to do. He saw his team down 20-0 at half time and playing miserably, including an interception thrown by Reesing. But Kansas defense and offense revved themselves up and behind Reesing’s 319 yards and 3 touchdowns, Kansas stormed back to win the game 35-33. A loss would have hurt Kansas badly in trying to keep up with Missouri. Reesing made sure they kept pace.

LeSean McCoy (Pitt) finally played up to his billing as one of the best backs in college football. McCoy pounded South Florida for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns on 28 carries. In this tight game, when the Bulls needed a stop to kill a drive, McCoy made the needed yards to keep the drive alive. It was McCoy’s second touchdown that put Pittsburgh ahead 26-21 and sealed the win. Without this performance by McCoy, Pitt would have lost. And to think, McCoy did this on the road in Tampa.

Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame) is showing why he was highly recruited in high school. He not only has Notre Dame at 4-1, but he is playing great. Clausen threw for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns against Stanford, going 29-40 from the field. He completed 72.5% of his passes and has Notre Dame sitting pretty to go to a bowl game. They still must face Boston College, Pittsburgh, Navy, and USC. But for now, Clausen and Notre Dame is looking pretty good.

Glenn Coffee (ALA) is at it again as he makes his second appearance. Coffee and Alabama needed every yard he made against Kentucky as Kentucky stormed back from a 14-0 deficit only to lose 17-14. And Coffee pounded out 218 yards on 25 carries plus a touchdown. And when Kentucky needed a stop Coffee kept the drive going. This might have been a let down game for Alabama but Coffee was their to make things happen.

Collin Mooney (Army) is a player that I never thought I would see nominated. Heck, I never thought I would see any player from Army nominated. But Collin helped destroy Tulane 44-13. For his effort, Mooney rushed for 187 yards and 4 touchdowns. He set the tone of the game by scoring the first touchdown of the game. Army continued to roll after that. Mooney would then score his last two touchdowns of the game of the game in an already secured victory; their first victory of the year.

Juice Williams (Illinois) dominated, and I mean dominated Michigan in the Big House. Williams not only threw for 310 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he torched the Wolverines for 121 yards rushing on 19 carries and 2 more touchdowns. Now that is amazing. He is one of the most talented athletes in college football. I can’t wait for Penn State and Illinois.

Demaryius Thomas (Georgia Tech) performed something I have never seen happen in all my days. Not saying that it has never happened, but I have never seen it. Thomas caught 9 receptions for 230 yards and 1 touchdown. An amazing day for the receiver, right? Well he was the only person to have a reception for the Yellow Jackets. That’s right. The quarterback went 9-14 for 230 yards and 1 touchdown. That is amazing all by itself.

Terrell Fenroy (Louisiana Lafayette) has shown that he can run the ball big time. And against Louisiana Monroe, it was needed. Fenroy helped Ragin’ Cajuns win a shootout 44-35. Fenroy also exploded for an amazing 297 on 20 carries for 3 touchdowns. Fenroy had touchdown runs of 89 yards, 52 yards, and 80 yards. The last touchdown run sealed the win for the Ragin’ Cajuns. This is his third big week. If Fenroy keeps this up and he might find himself in the NFL.

Player of the Week

Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) wanted the rest of the country to know that there are more quarterbacks in the Big 12 other than Sam Bradford, Chase Daniels, and Colt McCoy. He put on a show as he destroyed Kansas State with his arm. Harrell was 38-51 from the field for 454 yards and 6 touchdowns. Harrell would add a rushing touchdown for the day as well making it 7 touchdowns accounted for by Harrell alone. He completed passes to 10 different receivers and all K-State fans could do was shake their heads.

Offense of the Week

Louisiana Lafayette piled up an amazing 728 of total offense against Louisiana Monroe. Of that 556 yards of that was done on the ground. Talk about not being stopped? Hard to believe that the Ragin’ Cajuns had 5 punts in the game.

Defense of the Week

Ball State completely shut down Toledo’s offense allowing only 162 total offensive yards. So we are looking at 148 yards passing and 14 yards rushing. Ball State gave up just11 first downs and blanked the Rockets 31-0.
