Auto Insurance Requirements for Salt Lake City
If you are looking to buy car insurance in Salt Lake City, it can be helpful to know the minimum amount of coverage that you need so that you have a base from which to make your decisions. The two things which you need are liability coverage and personal injury protection (PIP). Exactly how much liability coverage do you need? You have to have at least 25/65/15 (this is the format you’ll see liability coverage written in). In other words, you must have $25,000 in bodily injury liability for one person, $65,000 in bodily injury liability for all people in an accident, and $15,000 in property damage liability. Bodily injury liability covers the medical bills, wage last, and/or pain and suffering. Property damage liability covers damage done to other cars as well as fixed pieces of property such as telephone polls and fences. Also, keep in mind that liability coverage does not protect you, but those around you! Is it all right to buy the minimum amount of liability insurance? Depends on your situation. Generally, if you think that you’ll have enough income to cover the damage in a serious accident, the more you can afford to stay closer the minimum. Unfortunately, most of us cannot afford to do that, which is why it is recommended that you have liability coverage in the form of 100/300/50.
Aside from liability coverage, you are also required to have Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which covers the medical expenses, wage lost, and/or replacement services for you, your family, your passengers, and pedestrians, regardless of whose fault an accident was .
There are, of course, other types of insurance that you should consider, but liability insurance and PIP is all that is required.
